Who we are
The Institute for Development of Community Strengths (INDECOS) was established in 1991 during a period of social and economic disruption in Southern Sri Lanka. At a time when many institutions had scaled back their work, a group of experienced professionals came together with a shared purpose to remain engaged with communities and support them through change.Over the years, INDECOS has grown into a community development and training-based organization working across Galle, Matara, and Hambantota. Our work focuses on creating space for people to come together, share experiences, and take part in shaping the initiatives that affect their lives. We believe meaningful change happens when communities are part of the process from the beginning. Through participatory approaches, community members are involved in planning, implementation, and follow up, ensuring that initiatives remain relevant and grounded in local realities. Our work spans areas such as education, awareness, and community engagement, often using interactive and dialogue-based methods. Alongside this, we continue to support other organizations and networks to strengthen their own capacities and contribute to broader community development efforts.Since its inception, INDECOS has worked in partnership with a range of local and international organizations, contributing to initiatives that aim to improve the quality of life of underserved communities across the region.
