Breaking Barriers: The Empowering Journey of Aruna Kalyani Liyanage

GN Division, Navimana South, February 2025 — In the heart of Navimana South, where traditional gender roles often limit women’s opportunities, one woman has dared to defy the odds. Aruna Kalyani Liyanage, once a stay-at-home wife, is now a thriving entrepreneur, a community leader, and an inspiration to women far and wide. Her story is a testament to resilience, empowerment, and the life-changing impact of initiatives like the Women’s Empowerment Program (WEP) with IGNI+E’s volunteer support.
A Life-Changing Opportunity
Aruna’s journey to success began with a simple desire for change. She and her husband ran a small brick-making business, but limited financial knowledge and resources kept them from scaling. Like many women in her community, Aruna’s role was traditionally confined to managing the household. But everything changed when she joined WEP, an initiative by INDECOS designed to equip women with essential skills in business and financial management.
“I didn’t know anything about running a business before WEP,” Aruna recalls with a smile. “I just helped my husband here and there. But after learning about management, budgeting, and leadership, I took the bold step of becoming an equal partner in our business.”

This newfound confidence, coupled with training from expert volunteers supported by IGNI+E, was the turning point for Aruna. Equipped with essential business and leadership skills, she was ready to take charge and grow the family business.
Funding Support: A Step Towards Expansion
Aruna accessed a 30,000 LKR loan from INDECOS, which enabled her to purchase a brick-making machine. This key investment boosted her production efficiency and increased the business’s profitability.
“It wasn’t just a loan—it was a catalyst,” says Aruna. “It allowed us to scale up and prove to ourselves that we could manage and expand the business.”
Thanks to the loan, Aruna was able to make strategic personal investments, including purchasing vehicles for the business and an electric motorbike—the first owned by a woman in Navimana South.
“I chose an electric bike because I want to protect the environment,” she shares proudly. “I encourage others to do the same.”
Innovation and Diversification
Aruna’s entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop at brick-making. With the collaborative innovation, she expanded her business further by renting out a concrete mixer machine, diversifying her income streams, and creating more opportunities for growth.
In addition to the success of her business, Aruna’s commitment to sustainability shines through. Her choice to purchase an electric bike and her promotion of eco-friendly practices are part of her broader vision to not only grow her business, but also make a positive impact on her community and environment.

A Supportive Community: Networking Opportunities
As Aruna’s business grew, so did her leadership role within the community. In 2010, she became chairperson of the Nildiya Women’s Society, where she expanded the membership from 10 to 20 women. Under her guidance, more women accessed financial training, gained confidence, and began starting their own businesses.
“I tell every woman I meet—do not stay idle at home,” Aruna passionately advises. “Learn new skills, start a business, and support your family. We, as women, must uplift one another.”
IGNI+E, through its volunteers network, also played a key role in connecting Aruna with other entrepreneurs, offering her valuable advice, partnerships, and business opportunities. These connections have helped Aruna inspire others to break free from traditional gender roles and become economically independent.
Promoting Gender Equality and Economic Growth
Aruna’s success has created a ripple effect in her community. She has become a powerful advocate for women’s empowerment, encouraging other women to follow in her footsteps.
“Don’t stay idle at home,” she urges. “Learn new skills, start a business, and support your family. We, as women, must uplift one another.”
With the support of IGNI+E volunteers , INDECOS has not only helped Aruna achieve her goals, but also contributed to fostering gender equality and inclusive economic growth in Navimana South. Through her leadership in the Women’s Society, Aruna continues to challenge societal norms and inspire other women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.

A Brighter Future for All
Aruna’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when women are given the tools, resources, and networks to succeed. Thanks to IGNI+E’s volunteer expertise, and collaborative support to INDECOS, Aruna has built a thriving business, inspired a community of women entrepreneurs, and paved the way for future generations to thrive.
As Aruna looks ahead, her message remains simple yet profound: “Don’t be afraid to take the first step. Learn, grow, and support one another. If I can do it, so can you.“
Today, as Aruna continues to expand her business, inspire her community, and break down barriers, her success proves that when women rise, entire communities thrive. Through such initiatives, women like Aruna are not only redefining what’s possible—they’re creating a future where gender equality and sustainable economic growth go hand in hand.
This success story showcases how one woman’s determination, backed by the right support, can change not just her own life, but also the future of an entire community.
