INDECOS successfully conducted
INDECOS successfully conducted a series of 10 small group awareness sessions across the Matara District as part of its ongoing efforts to address gender inequality and gender-based violence (GBV).
A total of 162 women participants, including youth and women entrepreneurs, actively engaged in these sessions held in communities such as Hittatiya, Weligama, Dondra, Polhena, and Walpola. These sessions were facilitated by trained women facilitators, who were equipped with knowledge on gender norms, stereotypes, and GBV prevention.
The workshops created safe and inclusive spaces for participants to openly discuss sensitive issues such as domestic violence, discrimination, and harmful social norms. Through interactive discussions, participants reflected on real-life challenges and explored ways to promote respect, equality, and non-violence within their communities.
One of the key achievements of this initiative was the high level of engagement and openness among participants. Many women expressed their willingness to break the silence around violence and support others in seeking help. The sessions also improved awareness of legal rights and available support services.
A powerful highlight was the participation of a female municipal councilor, who shared how the session helped her better understand gender-related issues and strengthened her commitment to addressing them in her leadership role.
Despite the success, the program also identified important areas for improvement, including the need to engage men and boys, strengthen referral systems for survivors, and ensure continuous community dialogue.
Overall, this initiative marks a significant step toward building safer, more inclusive communities in Matara. INDECOS remains committed to expanding these efforts and promoting long-term social change through community-driven awareness and action.
